In Memoriam
MARGARET BURBANK
"Maggie"
Dec. 4, 1925 - Sept. 17, 2011
Margaret "Maggie" Burbank of Westhampton Beach died at home on Saturday, September 17. She was 85.
Born and raised in the Bronx, she was the daughter of Richard J. Barry and Wilma Grozinger Barry. After graduating from Ursuline Academy and Berkeley Business School, Ms. Burbank worked as a secretary in Manhattan until 1947 when she married William Burbank of Boston, whom she met at the Soldiers & Sailors Club in Manhattan. They had three children during the next five years. Widowed in 1959, Ms. Burbank single-handedly raised three daughters in the Bronx, imbuing them with a sense of self-sufficiency and optimism and the courage to follow their own dreams.
In 1975, she relocated to Westhampton and began her wonderful, vibrant "second act." She worked as an office assistant at Mendenhall Fuel Company until 1995. Maggie then began her 15-year tenure as office administrator of the Greater Westhampton Chamber of Commerce.
Ms. Burbank was an avid reader and enjoyed her daily crossword puzzles & cooking shows. She loved butterflies and flowers, autumn and Christmas, Judy Garland and Nat King Cole, fried oysters and soft-shell crabs, and-most especially-the color yellow. While she was fiercely independent and relished living alone, she had a full and happy social life in the Greater Westhampton community.
Known for her warm smaile, great sense of humor and spunky spirit, Ms. Burbank possessed a joie de vivre that kept her eternally youthful. She made many close and devoted friends over the years, including more than a few who were decades younger than she - a testament to her ageless attitude and fun-loving spirit. Her family and friends mourn her loss, but celebrate her remarkable life and will always remember her loving heart and indomitable spirit.
She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-laws, Christine and John Murray of East Quogue, Kathleen and Peter Quinn of Hastings-on-Hudson, and Patricia Burbank and Barry Gilmore of North Caroline; her sister Eileen Dignon of Bohemia; and her grandchildren, Alison and Alex Murray, Genevieve and Daniel Quinn, and Hilary Gilmore.
Visitation was held at the Follett & Werner Funeral home on Mill Road in Westhampton Beach on Wednesday, September 21. A funeral mass took place on Thursday, September 22 at Immaculate Conception Church in Quiogue.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to East End Hospice, P.O. Box 1048, Westhampton Beach, NY 11978 or to the Greater Westhampton Chamber of Commerce to establish the Maggie Burbank Memorial Garden around the chamber of commerce offices.
"Everything Local" Campaign: The 3/50 Project
As we enter our Autumn season, we encourage year-round residents and visitors alike to support the businesses in our local communities. The Greater Westhampton Chamber of Commerce continues with their support of the 350 Project this year in hopes of keeping the local brick and mortar businesses that make up our communities thriving and operating. It is a proven fact that 68% of money spent in our locally owned independent stores returns through taxes, payroll, and other expenditure. That is not the case when purchases are made in national brand chain stores or online... nothing comes home to our communities then. Please take a minute and visit the 350 Project homepage and learn how you can extend the trend of saving the locally owned brick and mortar stores of our communities. Our local communities and businesses depend on it for continued success.

It is very useful for leaders to be able to share their responsibilities' and pressures with an uninvolved , understanding, neutral colleague who is not part of the day-to-day running of the business. One who nevertheless quickly understands the situation and associated problems, particularly when it is very likely that your temporary colleague has been faced with similar challenges.
Often heard:
"I would like an honest and unbiased opinion"
"Can I bounce this idea off you?"
"Tell me what you think before I present this to the board"
"I could do with some support at this meeting"
"Does this make sense to you?"
"How do you think that went?"
"How can I resolve the problem between them when they see me as being involved?"
"It would be helpful to get an outsiders opinion"
"Do you think this will fly?""
"They may respond to you, you don't have any baggage"
Decision makers, planners, trainers, negotiators, managers, directors, presidents all have a common full time partner - it's called 'responsibility' that comes with varying degrees of stress.
I'm your part time partner, with peer to peer understanding and support for a few hours, a few days or weeks according to your needs. You pay me when I'm there for you and when I'm not, - you don't.
"On your team but not on your payroll"
