MARGARET  BURBANK

"Maggie"

Dec. 4, 1925 - Sept. 17, 2011

Margaret "Maggie" Burbank of Westhampton Beach died at home on Saturday, September 17.
She was 85.

Born and raised in the Bronx, she was the daughter of Richard J. Barry and Wilma Grozinger Barry. After graduating from Ursuline Academy and Berkeley Business School, Ms. Burbank worked as a secretary in Manhattan until 1947 when she married William Burbank of Boston, whom she met at the Soldiers & Sailors Club in Manhattan. They had three children during the next five years.

Widowed in 1959, Ms. Burbank single-handedly raised three daughters in the Bronx, imbuing them with a sense of self-sufficiency and optimism and the courage to follow their own dreams.

In 1975, she relocated to Westhampton and began her wonderful, vibrant "second act." She worked as an office assistant at Mendenhall Fuel Company until 1995. Maggie then began her 15-year tenure as office administrator of the Greater Westhampton Chamber of Commerce.

Ms. Burbank was an avid reader and enjoyed her daily crossword puzzles & cooking shows. She loved butterflies and flowers, autumn and Christmas, Judy Garland and Nat King Cole, fried oysters and soft-shell crabs, and-most especially-the color yellow. While she was fiercely independent and relished living alone, she had a full and happy social life in the Greater Westhampton community.

Known for her warm smaile, great sense of humor and spunky spirit, Ms. Burbank possessed a joie de vivre that kept her eternally youthful. She made many close and devoted friends over the years, including more than a few who were decades younger than she - a testament to her ageless attitude and fun-loving spirit. Her family and friends mourn her loss, but celebrate her remarkable life and will always remember her loving heart and indomitable spirit.

She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-laws, Christine and John Murray of East Quogue, Kathleen and Peter Quinn of Hastings-on-Hudson, and Patricia Burbank and Barry Gilmore of North Caroline; her sister Eileen Dignon of Bohemia; and her grandchildren, Alison and Alex Murray, Genevieve and Daniel Quinn, and Hilary Gilmore.

Visitation was held at the Follett & Werner Funeral home on Mill Road in Westhampton Beach on Wednesday, September 21. A funeral mass took place on Thursday, September 22 at Immaculate Conception Church in Quiogue.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to East End Hospice, P.O. Box 1048, Westhampton Beach, NY 11978 or to the Greater Westhampton Chamber of Commerce to establish the Maggie Burbank Memorial Garden around the chamber of commerce offices.

"Everything Local" Campaign:
The 3/50 Project

As we enter our Autumn season, we encourage year-round residents and visitors alike to support the businesses in our local communities. The Greater Westhampton Chamber of Commerce continues with their support of the 350 Project this year in hopes of keeping the local brick and mortar businesses that make up our communities thriving and operating. It is a proven fact that 68% of money spent in our locally owned independent stores returns through taxes, payroll, and other expenditure. That is not the case when purchases are made in national brand chain stores or online... nothing comes home to our communities then. Please take a minute and visit the 350 Project homepage and learn how you can extend the trend of saving the locally owned brick and mortar stores of our communities. Our local communities and businesses depend on it for continued success.

As one of the premier high end custom builders on the East End of Long Island for almost thirty years, James V. Zizzi take his inspiration from the natural beauty of the area; his homes always seem to be in esthetic harmony with their surroundings. Known for using vivid colors, textures and shapes to enhance and instill a sense of natural warmth in all his projects. James V. Zizzi never compromises when it comes to constructing his houses in an environmentally - conscientious manner. Working with his clients to ensure that their needs are met, he fastidiously avoids overwhelming the natural beauty of the property and surrounding area. Putting clients first, in great part explains the success of this corporation. Yet the client benefits as well. "Our success has enabled us to vastly broaden our core supplier roster. Our clients want their homes to make a statement. That means our resources for raw materials and finished goods need to far outreach the expected. Testament to the satisfaction his clients experienced from him is the trust they have for him. So much so that for every one of the magnificent custom homes he's built on the East End of Long Island, he still holds a key. That way if the owner is out of town and something needs attending to, Team Zizzi cabn get to it. It always comes back to the work and the reputation. Out here, "good" doesn't cut it. "Superb" is the standard, and James V. Zizzi keeps raising the bar. Perhaps it's his innate competitive spirit, or perhaps it's that he builds from the heart.

Knights of Columbus #7423 Fr. Joseph Slomski Council
Post Office Box 415
Westhampton Beach, New York 11978
631.878.2853

Thanks to the efforts of Father Michael J. McGivney, assistant pastor of St. Mary’s Church in New Haven and some of his parishioners, the Connecticut state legislature on March 29, 1882, officially chartered the Knights of Columbus as a fraternal benefit society. The Order is still true to its founding principles of charity, unity and fraternity. The Knights was formed to render financial aid to members and their families. Mutual aid and assistance are offered to sick, disabled and needy members and their families. Social and intellectual fellowship is promoted among members and their families through educational, charitable, religious, social welfare, war relief and public relief works. The history of the Order shows how the foresight of Father Michael J. McGivney, whose cause for sainthood is being investigated by the Vatican, brought about what has become the world's foremost Catholic fraternal benefit society. The Order has helped families obtain economic security and stability through its life insurance, annuity and long-term care programs, and has contributed time and energy worldwide to service in communities. The Knights of Columbus has grown from several members in one council to more than 13,000 councils and 1.7 million members throughout the United States, Canada, the Philippines, Mexico, Poland, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Panama, the Bahamas, the Virgin Islands, Cuba, Guatemala, Guam and Saipan.
